Project: School Vegetable Garden Expansion

We are looking to expand our school’s vegetable garden to grow more food for our school community. Our students will experience hands-on learning by starting seeds from scratch in the spring and planting them in raised garden beds once mature to fully follow the process from start to finish.

will learn valuable life skills on how to grow a garden. Students will be involved in raising plants from seeds, planting the seeds in the ground in late spring, watering plants and picking produce to take home and share with their families. Students will have access to fresh, local produce with no cost, promoting better nutrition in our school population. Growing our own produce also helps to reduce reliance on commercial food systems and reduces environmental impact making it a more sustainable choice. Our project will be implemented with the help of our Hamlin Garden Club. Our club will coordinate with teachers to give them the materials to start seeds in their classrooms and opportunity to plant the seeds in our garden beds in the spring. We will have a sign-up genius for families to take turns watering plants over the summer and keep families updated on our garden and what is available to pick via social media. Our hope is that our students take these skills home and start gardens at their own homes, promoting a healthy future and lifestyle for years to come.
